CHOOSING THE RIGHT STAIN

Wooden planks labeled from left to right as Clear, Transparent, Semi Transparent, Semi Solid, Solid, showing different levels of finish or opacity

Imagine stain as being sunscreen for wood. Stain not only serves aesthetic purposes, it also protects your fence from the suns potentially harmful rays.

Transparent stain options offer full visibility of wood grain and texture. They do provide your wood with some protection but, have to be re-applied more often because of their opacity or ability to let light/UV rays through. They usually need to be applied every 1-3 years. If transparent stains were a sunscreen, they’d be SPF 2-4.

Next up you have semi-transparent stain options. These stains come in many colors. They are also offered in water-based and oil based options. At Cola Pro Fence and Deck Staining, we prefer to use oil based stain options, as they penetrate the wood deeper and repel water better.  If these stains were sunscreen, they’d be SPF 15.

Semi-solid stains are darker than their transparent counterparts and contain more pigments that provide better protection for your fence or deck. Because they are darker, you see less wood grain, although wood texture is still clearly visible as well as some grain. These stains can last 3-6+ years. If this stain had an SPF rating, it’d be SPF 50.

Solid stains come in a variety of colors as well. Solid stains offer great protection for your fences and decks. The only caveat is that solid stain can be scraped easily on horizontal walking surfaces such as decks because it does not penetrate as deeply as the other stains do. Because it is solid, you see less wood grain while still maintaining the visible wood texture. Solid stain is best on vertical surfaces but, is also suitable for decks.

  • Fence Staining/Sealing in Central Texas

    Stain/Seal Application

This is the final stage of the wood restoration process. Stain and Seal are used to protect new wood or freshly restored wood. Fence stain and deck stain protect your wood fence and deck from warping, twisting, and natural elements while also improving appearance and curb appeal. Fence stain and deck staining/sealing also provide an added layer of protection from the intense TX sun while also preserving your wood.

  • Pressure Washing/Fence Cleaning

    Powerwashing/ Cleaning

Properly washing your fence is the first step in restoring your fence, deck, or wooden structure. Pressure washing with low pressure and the proper blend of cleaners will remove organic growth, such as algae, mold, mildew, and more. This step is a necessary step before applying stain or sealant to a weathered fence. Not properly cleaning a fence can cause the stain to lock in mold and organic matter and allow it to expand beneath the stain. In some cases, acid treatment is needed to brighten (remove the gray) the wood for transparent and semi-transparent staining.

FAQs

  • Fences, decks, docks, pergolas and all wood structures are an investment and any investment is worth protecting. Staining and sealing not only protects and preserves your wooden structure but improves the aesthetics of your outdoor living spaces.

  • There usually are no seasonal restrictions when applying specific stains. In order for something to be stained, the wood must be dry and have an acceptable moisture level reading.

  • When staining and sealing your fence, deck, or wooden structure, you are protecting an investment.

Generally speaking, the price can range from $0.50- $1.00 per square foot for most fencing projects. This price fluctuates according to what is needed i.e (repairs, brightening, etc).

Decks are priced a little differently, once again, depending on what services are needed and the intricacies of the deck.

A 3 year workmanship warranty is included with our services. Additional charges can be applied if furniture, decor, or obstacles have to be moved to complete the job if not discussed beforehand.

  • Ideally, we want to be able to access your wooden structure with ease. Trimming large hedges from fence or deck lines will allow easy access for your contractor. Try and remove all furniture, decor, lighting, and rugs and turn off sprinklers.

  • Outdoor spaces should be treated just as well a your indoor spaces. Taking a leaf blower to your fence or deck several times a year, is a great way to remove debris from your wood. Using gentle chemicals to clean once a year will not only keep your structure looking new, it will also kill any organic growth that your fence or deck may accumulate. It is also best to apply a maintenance coat of stain every 3-5 years for fences, every 2 years for decks (high traffic), and every 4-6 years for railings and spindles.

  • It is not too late to stain your fence or deck! Even old wooden structures can be cleaned and restored. In a lot of cases a basic wash is needed before staining. In more extreme cases, full restoration is needed. This would include cleaning, brightening, and in some cases, sanding.
